Is Hindi hard to learn for English speakers?

Moderately. The US Foreign Service Institute rates Hindi Category III — about 1,100 hours to professional proficiency, harder than Spanish or French but easier than Arabic, Chinese or Japanese. Speaking comes faster than most people expect; the script and the gender system are the real work.

How long does it take to learn Hindi?

Around 4–6 months of consistent study for simple conversation, and 1–2 years for comfortable everyday fluency. The Foreign Service Institute's full-time estimate is 1,100 hours to professional working proficiency.

Are Hindi and Urdu the same language?

In speech, largely yes — a Hindi speaker and an Urdu speaker understand each other completely. In writing, no: Hindi uses Devanagari left to right, Urdu uses a Perso-Arabic script right to left. Formal vocabulary also diverges, Hindi towards Sanskrit and Urdu towards Persian and Arabic.

Identical in everyday speech

"My name is Aman and I live in Delhi" is the same sentence in both: mera naam Aman hai aur main Dilli mein rehta hoon. Same grammar, same word order, same vocabulary.

Linguists often use a single name for the shared spoken language: Hindustani.

Where they part

Script. The real difference. Two people who speak identically cannot read each other's writing at all.
Formal vocabulary. Hindi reaches for Sanskrit (dhanyavaad, prashna), Urdu for Persian and Arabic (shukriya, sawaal).

But notice: most Hindi speakers say shukriya and sawaal in ordinary conversation. The split is real mainly in official, literary and news language.

So which should you learn?

Travelling in north India or watching Bollywood — Hindi. Family in Pakistan or an interest in ghazal poetry — Urdu. Only want to speak — learn Hindustani and ignore the label; you will be understood in Delhi and Lahore alike.
