What self-study does well
The script. Two weeks with free resources and you can
read. No teacher needed.
Vocabulary. Apps are genuinely good at this.
Listening. Unlimited free Hindi on YouTube and in film.
Grammar rules. Readable, learnable, free.
Where it reliably stalls
Speaking. Not because it is hard, but because you cannot hear your
own mistakes. Specifically:
त vs ट and द vs ड. English has neither distinction. You
will use the wrong one for a year and never be told.
Gendered verbs. You will read that a man says
karta and a woman karti, then get it wrong out loud
constantly without noticing.
Speed. Understanding a slow YouTube teacher does not
prepare you for a real person.
The result is very common: people who can read Hindi, follow a film with
subtitles, and freeze completely when someone speaks to them.
The cheapest fix
Self-study for everything, plus one conversation a week
with a person. Not daily lessons — one hour, weekly, purely speaking.
A language exchange partner is free and works if you are disciplined. A
tutor costs $6–$6 and is more focused because they correct rather than just
