EkGuruHindi questions

How can I teach my child Hindi?

Speak it at home from the start if you can, use songs and cartoons rather than lessons before about age seven, and add a tutor once they can already follow simple speech. Children learn from use, not from study.

Under seven

No formal lessons. What works at this age:

Seven to twelve

Now the script is worth starting and a tutor begins to help. At this age children learn Devanagari faster than adults, and they enjoy it — it looks like a code.

Keep sessions short. Thirty minutes twice a week beats an hour once.

Teenagers

Motivation is the whole problem, not ability. A teenager who wants to talk to cousins or understand song lyrics will learn fast; one being made to attend will not, regardless of the teacher.

The mistake that undoes everything

Replying in English when they speak Hindi. It is the single most common way heritage languages are lost — the child works out that Hindi is optional and stops. Answer in Hindi even when their sentence was broken.

If you want help

Several of our tutors teach children specifically, from $6 a lesson. Ask for a trial and watch how your child responds — with kids, rapport matters more than qualifications.

Practise this with a teacher

Reading an answer is one thing; being corrected while you say it is another. EkGuru tutors teach one to one from $6 a lesson, and most offer a trial.
