How can I teach my child Hindi?

Under seven

No formal lessons. What works at this age:

• One parent, one language, consistently. Children handle two languages easily; they get confused by adults switching mid-sentence.
• Songs and rhymes. Melody carries vocabulary into memory in a way repetition does not.
• Cartoons in Hindi — the same shows they already like, with the language switched.
• Grandparents. By far the most effective Hindi teachers in any family, because the child needs the language to be understood.

Seven to twelve

Now the script is worth starting and a tutor begins to help. At this age children learn Devanagari faster than adults, and they enjoy it — it looks like a code.

Keep sessions short. Thirty minutes twice a week beats an hour once.

Teenagers

Motivation is the whole problem, not ability. A teenager who wants to talk to cousins or understand song lyrics will learn fast; one being made to attend will not, regardless of the teacher.

The mistake that undoes everything

Replying in English when they speak Hindi. It is the single most common way heritage languages are lost — the child works out that Hindi is optional and stops. Answer in Hindi even when their sentence was broken.
